Cat. #0013422: REX EVANS

Highly rare vintage handwritten, signed letter to fellow actor Peter Hansen in blue ballpoint pen on an 8.5 x 11-inch sheet of his personal stationery, dating to the 1960s. In good condition, with a few minor surface crinkles. Note that the image of the star shown here alongside the scan of the signed document is not included. Portly British character actor Rex Evans made his bones as a London cabaret and music hall performer, before relocating to the States and simultaneously embarking upon stage and film careers. On the big screen, he was the quintessential corpulent sugar daddy, unscrupulous millionaire or dignified manservant, memorable in classic films like Camille (1936), Rembrandt (1936), A Star Is Born (1937), The Prince and the Pauper (1937), The Philadelphia Story (1940), Suspicion (1941), The Shanghai Gesture (1941), Nazty Nuisance (1943), Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves (1944), The Thin Man Goes Home (1945), The Ziegfeld Follies (1945), and Till the Cloud Rolls By (1946). Evans is dear to the hearts of horror, sci-fi, fantasy, and mystery buffs for his portrayals of Constable Briggs in The Invisible Man Returns (1940), the grumpy innkeeper in Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman (1943), Lord Goodbody in The Picture of Dorian Gray (1945), and the principal villain in the Sherlock Holmes opus Pursuit to Algiers (1945).
