Often compared to George Macready, he was a master of urbane villainy, playing despicable Arab chieftains, Mexican bandits and Indian maharajahs in Temptation (1946), The Loves of Carmen (1948), The Reign of Terror (1949), Border Incident (1949), Mask of the Avenger (1951), Viva Zapata! (1952), Salome (1953), The Fool Killer (1965), and Gambit (1966). Perhaps his most famous role-- probably to his chagin!-- was that of the snarky head alien in the campy sci-fi classic The 27th Day (1957). He was also terrific as Anton Karidian, wicked, mysterious alter-ego of the tyrannical Governor Kodos of Tarsus IV, on T.V.'s "Star Trek" (1966).
